Empowering Defense: Ampex Data Systems and Leonardo DRS Pioneering Edge Solutions

May 14, 2024

Ampex Data Systems specializes in delivering SWaP-C-optimized rugged data and encryption solutions for edge applications to the DoD, allied forces, and its supporting industries. Our partnership with Leonardo DRS underscores our steadfast mission and mutual commitment to delivering ‘excellence to the edge.’ We specifically developed a Mission Data Recorder (MDR) for this vehicle to accommodate its extensive sensor capabilities, showcasing our commitment to customized yet open architecture solutions. The MDR delivers unparalleled performance and meets MIL-STD 810 standards, ensuring flawless operation in even the most demanding conditions. Designed for seamless integration with vehicle electronics, it enhances data integrity and security and provides generous storage capacities and efficient power management to support a diverse array of sensors.

Our system’s user-friendly interface and removable media, which are very easy to access, were specifically tailored to simplify operations for ground vehicle personnel, making our solutions as intuitive as they are powerful.

Our partnership with Leonardo DRS marks a significant milestone in our journey, furthering our legacy of innovation. This collaboration is highlighted by the rapid development and deployment of a next-generation Counter-Unmanned Aerial System (C-UAS) vehicle, built on the Stryker Double-V Hull Infantry Carrier Vehicle (ICVVA1). The initial deployment featured the Kinetic version of the Leonardo DRS CUAS. Developed within a rigorous seven-month period to meet urgent U.S. Army demands, this version effectively merged the capabilities of two M-ATV vehicles into a single, flexible platform that falls under the Mobile, Low, Slow, Unmanned Aircraft Integrated Defeat System (M-LIDS) program.

Impressed by the success and rapid deployment of the Kinetic variant, the U.S. Army has encouraged the development of a Directed Energy (DE) variant of the C-UAS system. This newly prototyped Mission Equipment Package for the DE version is engineered to engage different types of targets based on their range and size. This capability provides a versatile and effective defense, offering comprehensive threat coverage tailored to specific battlefield needs and underscores our commitment to continued innovation in defense technology.
