Radar Data

Capturing and storing radar data can be tricky business because of the unique, proprietary radar architectures used and the special interfaces required. Ampex has decades of experience in radar data storage and currently provide systems to store radar data on key platforms including the U.S. Navy’s E-2 Hawkeye, the Collins Aerospace TacSAR pod, the Japanese Navy’s P-1, and other international fighter and command and control aircraft.

As the Ampex system with the highest speed and largest capacity, the TuffServ 640 (TS-640) has the horsepower to meet the demands of any radar data ecosystem in the air, in the lab, and on the ground.  The TS-640’s “FP” (front panel) models are equipped with a serial front panel data port (sFPDP) interface common to radar manufactures. The Japanese Navy uses TS-640s to record radar data from the P-1 maritime patrol aircraft.

The TuffServ 540 has the benefit of being able to store even the most powerful radar’s data in an extremely small package. At just 105 cubic inches (2.9”H x 4.25”W x 8.5”D), it is smaller than a toddler’s shoe box. The front panel or “FP” model is equipped with a serial front panel data port (sFPDP) interface common to radar manufactures and radio frequency collection systems. The TS-540FP for example, is used onboard the development models of the Next Generation Jammer (mid-band).

The TuffServ 480v2 is considered the “sweet spot” for customers who need to record radar data, but don’t need the high-end capacity of the TS-640, nor the extremely small size of the TS-540. With its “FP” model, the 480v2 is equipped with a serial front panel data port (sFPDP) interface common to radar manufactures. The TS-480v2FP for example, is used onboard international multi-role fighters and airborne warning and control aircraft to record data from their custom-built multi-mode radars.

The TuffServ 282 comes standard with two removable storage modules (RSM), enabling users to record radar data on the larger RSM while using the compact RSM for uploading configuration, mission planning, or other data. The U.S. Navy’s E-2 Hawkeye is equipped with two TS-282s to record a combination of radar and other data, as well as upload pre-mission configuration files and navigation planning information.
